Cowan Vineyards

by Dan McCool on April 2, 2009

This is an interview with Dave Cowan of Cowan Vineyards in Prosser, WA. He is a self proclaimed “wine grower” and winemaker, specializing in Cabernet Franc. He is also very proud of his Scottish heritage, as evidenced by his label and the display of his clan’s tartans in the winery.

His wife Susan runs the tasting room. They also have a Yakima Valley wine country guest house near a golf course, perfect for your base camp while touring the valley.

I have always admired Consuelo’s work and it was a real treat to get to meet her in person. She is a very genuine and warm person with an incredible natural talent. Her colorful work expresses her Hispanic heritage and her intimate connection with the agricultural community. There is little doubt that she has actually lived the life she depicts in the paintings. Gallery owner Carol Ashby is a real delight and a great supporter of the local art scene. She also knows her wineries! I think I embarrassed her a little when I described Gewurtztraminer as the “G-spot” wine. But she recovered well and took it in stride. A good time for all!

Desert Wind Winery

I had a great time talking with Amber and Erin at Desert Wind Winery in Prosser, WA. It is a destination facility with four gorgeous rooms with views of Mt Adams from the private deck overlooking the Yakima River. They also have a great kitchen/dining area and host winemaker dinners and cooking school.

It is Erin’s Birthday today and I had a blast doing the studio video portion. I drank their signature Ruah wine and indulged in some Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake. Be sure and watch this one all the way to the end… the joke’s on me!
