Best job on the planet

Recession inspires entrepreneur to create dream job for himself

In these tough economic times, many businesses are cutting back and looking for more innovative, efficient and less expensive alternatives to the services they use every day. Consumers are doing the same, perhaps foregoing wine with dinner every night in favor of water or some other beverage. Dan McCool was one of those and not liking it one bit. So Mr. McCool decided to do something about it.

Instead of trying to figure out how to better afford wine, he decided to turn the problem on it’s head and devise an extreme solution. Why not actually get someone else to pay him to drink wine? Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? No one would do that without getting something in return and rightly so. What to offer in return? It had to be something affordable – and fun. Mr. McCool is certainly in favor of lots of fun, both for himself and his supporters.

While surfing the net he stumbled upon a site where a guy was offering to wear a different T-shirt everyday – all you had to do was send him the T-shirt, pay a fee and he would make a video of himself wearing the shirt, promoting your company. He posted these videos daily and blogged about it. It was the pricing structure that struck a chord with Mr. McCool. He was charging on a sliding scale, depending on what day of the year you purchased, January 1 costing $1 and December 31 costing $365. He had already sold over 300 days.

Mr.McCool casually mentioned this to his wife over dinner at a local restaurant (without wine) and she said “You could do that with wine. You could call it I Drink Your Wine.com.” “It hit me like a ton of bricks. I could hardly eat, I was so excited.” said Mr.McCool. “We pretty much mapped the whole thing out over dinner, and I rushed home to see if the domain name was available. It was and I bought it immediately.” And so idrinkyourwine.com was born.

The premise is simple and beautifully elegant. Anyone can sign up for a specific day. For 2009, April 1 costs $1 and December 31st costs $275) They provide Mr. McCool with a bottle of their choice, he has fun making a video of him drinking the wine and posts it to idrinkyourwine.com, along with photos and a blog entry with links to your business. He plans to have guest wine drinkers, already has a lovely spokesmodel lined up, and will go on location to shoot within a 25 mile radius of his home at no extra charge. On location, he is even willing to feature someone of your choice in the video – your winemaker, top sales rep, or your niece the supermodel.

He had originally planned to target only wineries (this is the ideal way to publicize and celebrate the release of a new vintage), but has decided to open it up to anyone who is willing to pay the fee and provide the wine. “Maybe someone wants to publicize the grand opening of their new business, or celebrate their engagement , or honor Grandma on her 100th birthday. Those are all things we could get excited about and raise a glass to,” says Mr. McCool. “The possibilities are endless. As of this writing, he has signed up wineries, a large regional wine magazine, painters, a sculptor, a midwife, an art gallery, a wine country on horseback tour operator, and a girls roller derby team. This promises to be an interesting year!

If you don’t want to pick a wine and ship it, Mr. McCool can purchase a good one for you. He charges just the local purchase price of the wine plus a $5 handling fee. You can request something specific and he will do his best to get it, as long as it is available locally. If you would rather leave it up to him, he is happy to pick out one of his favorites, just specify a price range. This is actually not a bad way to go, as you can avoid the hassle and expense of packaging and shipping, though most wineries will do that for you these days..

The website is live now and has sample videos, photos and a calendar of available dates. At these rates, Mr. McCool expects the first few months to sell out quickly. The early adopters are getting an especially sweet deal. Their cost is almost nothing, and as an added bonus, Mr. McCool is offering the first 50 participants first choice for days in 2010.

“This is an incredible opportunity where everyone gets great value”, says Mr. McCool “and I get to drink great wine again – everyday. Starting April 1st, I have the best job in the world.”

Mr.McCool’s parting tag at the end of each video says it all. With an impish grin he quips “If you’re buying, I’m drinking”

I was video taped by you at Walla Walla Village winery early April? Apparently someone saw my performance on your site. I tried to find it. I am compiling video footage of myself and would like to get it sent to me ? Not sure how to go about that.
